V3.0 Returning Player Guide

What Actually Changed (and What Nobody Tells You)

If you only read one section

  • Your old save probably loads, but you should start fresh. Seriously.
  • Difficulty settings got nuked and replaced with something called SandboxCode. If you run a server, this is your new life.
  • Two new systems — Magnitude gear and the Combine Station — change how you think about loot.
  • Magazines still exist. They're just less annoying now.
  • Crossplay works. Mostly. Read the fine print.

The Big One: Difficulty Is Gone

First thing you'll notice: the old difficulty slider? Gone. Scavenger through Insane? They're still there, but they're not a single dropdown anymore. V3.0 split difficulty into 150+ individual sliders — how much damage players deal, how fast zombies move at night, how often air drops happen, whether your stuff drops on death, and about 145 other things.

These all get packed into a string called a SandboxCode. It looks like someone mashed their keyboard — AAAJABJACJADJARFBNC — but that string encodes every setting. If you're just playing singleplayer, pick a preset in the menu and forget about it. If you run a server, you need to understand this thing because your old serverconfig.xml settings won't work anymore.

We built a free SandboxCode tool that lets you configure everything in a browser and even paste your old V2.6 XML to auto-convert it. No need to launch the game just to tweak settings.

Loot Got Interesting: Magnitude Gear

You know how in previous versions, once you had a purple-quality item, you were done looting? V3.0 added Magnitude — random stat boosts on weapons, tools, and mods. An orange star icon and a teal percentage number on the item card means it rolled higher than normal on some stat. Maybe your shotgun has extra range. Maybe your pickaxe mines faster. The boosts are random, so you actually have a reason to keep checking loot even at endgame.

The Combine Station is the new workstation that makes this system work. Find two of the same item? Throw them in the Combine Station. It takes the highest magnitude stat from each and merges them into one item — regardless of quality level. So a blue item with a great magnitude roll can be better than a purple without one.

Magazines: Still Here, Less Painful

The magazine system from V2.x is still the core progression mechanic. You find magazines, you read them, you unlock crafting tiers. V3.0 didn't overhaul this, but it did adjust drop rates and add a few QoL tweaks. The biggest change: Book Abundance is now its own sandbox option, so server admins can tweak magazine spawn rates separately from other loot.

Start Fresh. Trust Me.

Your V2.6 save will technically load in V3.0. The game won't crash. But the world generation changed enough that you're better off starting over. V3.0 added 60+ new POIs, reworked biome layouts, and tweaked terrain generation. On an old save, you only see new stuff in unexplored chunks — which means walking for 20 real-world minutes to find anything interesting.

Plus, the new POIs are actually good. Champions Coliseum (Tier 5 stadium) is worth starting fresh for by itself. If you've been away for a few months, just wipe and enjoy the new map.

Crossplay: The Fine Print

V3.0 brought PC, Xbox, and PS5 together for the first time. It works — mostly. But there are restrictions if you're hosting:

  • Max 8 players total (platform rule, not a technical limit)
  • Zero mods allowed — completely vanilla only for crossplay
  • EAC must be enabled
  • Map size capped at 8192
  • Stick to official presets rather than extreme custom slider values

Quick Wins for Returning Players

1.Generate a fresh RWG world. Don't port your old save unless you have 200+ hours on it.
2.Pick a preset from the Sandbox menu instead of tweaking 150 sliders one by one.
3.Check the new Combine Station at traders — it changes what loot you should keep vs sell.
4.If you run a server, use our SandboxCode tool instead of editing XML blind.
5.The M60 is the new endgame weapon. Perception/Sniper and Fortitude/Brawler are the strongest builds in V3.0.
