Best Horde Base Designs That Actually Work

The short version

  • V3.0 adds 150+ sandbox options. Two of them — Zombie Digging (on/off toggle) and Zombie Rage (percentage chance slider) — determine which base designs work.
  • Underground bunkers are viable again if you turn Zombie Digging off. They were dead for years.
  • Kill corridors still work under every preset. They are the safest design from Day 7 to endgame.
  • Concrete (5,000 HP) is the best value material through Day 35. Only upgrade high-traffic surfaces and support pillars to steel (10,000 HP).
  • Separate your horde base from your living base. Always.

What V3.0 Actually Changed

If you last built a horde base in V2.x, the rules you memorized no longer apply. Before V3.0, horde base design had one job: exploit zombie pathfinding. Zombies that couldn't reach you would switch to destroying whatever was in their way. The answer was always the same — a narrow corridor that funneled them single file into a kill zone.

That approach still works. It's just no longer the only one. V3.0's sandbox customization gives you independent control over the mechanics that previously dictated every base design decision—as detailed in the official TFP V3.0 dev diary.

The Zombie Digging toggle is the single biggest change. In previous versions, zombies dug through dirt and stone to reach players. An underground base meant constant risk of tunnel breaches during Blood Moon. Flip that toggle off, and the surface becomes optional — you can build an entirely subterranean defense.

The Zombie Rage slider replaces the old positional rage mechanic with a flat percentage. At 0%, zombies never rage regardless of how far they fall or how obstructed their path gets. At higher values, every blocked zombie has a dice roll to start swinging at structures.

Design 1: Kill Corridor

The kill corridor is the most reliable horde base design in 7 Days to Die. It works under every sandbox preset, doesn't require specific settings, and scales from a Day 7 pipe-machine-gun setup to endgame M60 spam.

Trap order matters. Electric Fence Posts stun zombies in place—they deal 3 damage every 0.5 seconds and slow zombies to near-zero speed for 3.2 seconds. Blade Traps, mounted on the ceiling at 2-block height for headshots, chew through the crowd while they're immobilized. Dart Traps add ranged damage from behind your position. Each layer covers a weakness in the one before it.

Mount Blade Traps on the ceiling, not the floor. Floor-mounted blades hit legs, turning zombies into crawlers that slide under the traps and reach your bars. Ceiling-mounted blades hit heads — more damage, more decapitations, fewer crawlers.

You don't need to upgrade every block to steel. The corridor floor and ceiling eat most of the structural damage — upgrade those first. Walls that zombies never path to can stay at reinforced concrete through Day 70. Use the Building Material Comparison tool to calculate exact upgrade costs for your base dimensions.

The golden rule:

Leave one deliberate weak path packed with traps. Reinforce everything else. Zombies pathfind to the route of least resistance. If your walls are 3-block-thick steel and your corridor is open, they'll walk into the corridor every time. Seal every opening equally, and they'll pick a random wall — and you don't get to choose which one.

Skill investment: Advanced Engineering (Intellect). Rank 1 grants 15% XP from trap kills, scaling to 75% at rank 5. At rank 3, you also unlock Blade Trap crafting. The XP alone pays for the perk points — after a late-game horde night, trap kills can level you multiple times.

Design 2: Underground Bunker

This design was dead for years. V3.0 brought it back. The Zombie Digging toggle — set to Off — means nothing burrows through the ground above or beside you. Zombies take the same entry route every Blood Moon: the surface entrance you built for them.

What makes it work

  • Separate your fighting level from your living level. A breach on Level 1 should never reach your storage or bedroll.
  • Reinforce the ceiling above your living quarters. Concrete at minimum. A Demolisher explosion on the surface can collapse blocks downward through soil.
  • Build a horizontal escape tunnel that surfaces 50+ blocks from your main entrance. One ladder shaft is a death trap if zombies pile in from above.
  • Manage your heat signature. Forges, cement mixers, and campfires generate heat even underground. Screamers spawn on the surface above you. Run forges in batches, not continuously.

The tradeoff: an underground bunker takes 2–3 in-game days of excavation with an Auger, longer by hand. But once it's built, maintenance drops to near zero. No wall repairs after every horde night. No replacing blade traps pounded by Demolishers. For players who'd rather spend Day 22 looting than rebuilding, the upfront labor pays off.

Keep Zombie Digging On? This design still works — build at bedrock (around -57m) and line the ceiling and upper half of all walls with steel. Design 3: Drop Base

Cost: 12,000–18,000 concrete equivalent · Works from Day 14 onward · Best with low Zombie Rage setting

Build a fighting platform 15–20 blocks in the air. One ramp leads up. Zombies climb it. You knock them off with a Sledge Turret, Robotic Sledge, or weapon knockback. They fall, survive (fall damage doesn't kill zombies), and path back up the ramp.

V3.0's Zombie Rage slider makes this stronger than ever. In older versions, zombies that fell far enough would trigger positional rage on their next approach and start attacking support pillars instead of pathing. Set Zombie Rage to a low percentage — or 0% — and that never happens.

Build specs

  • Platform height: 15–20 blocks above ground
  • Ramp: 1 block wide, wedge blocks, starting 20+ blocks from the support pillar
  • Fighting position: iron bars floor at the ramp terminus
  • 1–2 Sledge Turrets at the platform edge to knock zombies off
  • Robotic Sledge deployed behind you as backup

Risk: Demolishers. If one detonates near the support pillar, everything above it collapses. Reinforce the central support column with steel. Target Demolishers at maximum range — a Sniper Rifle headshot before they reach melee range of your structure. For your weapon loadout, check the V3.0 Weapon Tier List.

Early-game shortcut: convert a grain silo, water tower, or radio tower POI. The height is already there. You just need to reinforce the structure and add a fighting platform at the top.

Design 4: The Gatehouse

Cost: 8,000–12,000 concrete equivalent · Works Day 7–21 · Lowest skill floor

For your first few Blood Moons, you don't need a megastructure. You need something standing by Day 7 with limited tools and no Auger.

Build a 12×12 concrete box, 3 blocks high on all sides. Leave a 2-block-wide gap at ground level, center of one wall. Place iron bars 2 blocks behind the gap so zombies can't melee you through the opening. Put an iron hatch as emergency backup. Bring a Pipe Machine Gun or Double Barrel Shotgun, 300 rounds, and a couple Molotovs for the pile-up. The Horde Night Planner will give you exact ammo counts for your game stage.

This handles Day 7–21 on Nomad difficulty. By Day 28, irradiated zombies and Demolishers outpace it — time to graduate to a kill corridor or drop base.

Material Economics: Concrete vs Steel

Steel has double the HP of reinforced concrete (10,000 vs 5,000) but costs significantly more in forged steel and upgrade time. Spend your steel where it counts:

Sandbox Settings That Affect Your Build

For starting points, try the Undead Matinee preset (slow swarms, headshot emphasis, melee-focused) or Bite Club (permadeath, 50% rage chance). Same floor plan, completely different experience. All 11 official presets are selectable from the Sandbox Options menu when creating a world.

Rules That Don't Change

These hold across every version, every sandbox preset, every design:

  1. Keep your horde base and living base separate. Minimum 50 blocks apart. A Demolisher breach during Blood Moon should never destroy your storage, workstations, or bedroll.
  2. Every horizontal block needs a continuous vertical path of support to the ground. A single missing block in a support column collapses everything above and beyond it.
  3. Test your structural overhangs before horde night. Place a temporary block at the farthest horizontal extension. If it collapses, redesign.
  4. 200–300 rounds minimum for Day 7–21 hordes; 500+ for Day 35+. Per player. Adjust up if you've increased Blood Moon zombie count. Plan exact quantities with the Horde Night Planner.
  5. Layer traps instead of spamming one type. Electric fences stop, blades shred, darts clean up. Two of each outperforms six of one.
  6. Stock repair kits. Blade Traps degrade fast during long hordes. Keep a crate of 50+ next to your fighting position.
  7. Advanced Engineering pays for itself. At rank 5, you get 75% XP from trap kills and reduced crafting costs.

Looking Ahead: Bandits in V4.0

The Fun Pimps have confirmed Bandits — human NPC enemies with ranged weapons — are in active development. As noted in the V3.0 dev diary, Bandits are being built in parallel with V3.0 point releases and are expected for V4.0. Bandits don't pathfind like zombies. They shoot from cover, flank, and won't funnel obligingly into a kill corridor.

Designs that rely on predictable zombie pathing will need adaptation. Enclosed positions with 360° protection — bunkers, gatehouses — gain value. Kill corridors and drop bases that expose the player on one side may need significant redesign.

Build for the current threat. But don't be surprised if your V3.0 base needs a Bandit retrofit next year.
